2025 PGA Assistants’ Champion of Canada: Josh Landine
The 56th playing of the PGA Assistants’ Championship of Canada presented by Callaway Golf heads to the Greater Toronto Area this week, where a full field of 102 of the country’s top PGA of Canada professionals will compete May 26-28 at Bayview Golf & Country Club in Thornhill, Ontario.
Defending champion Josh Landine returns looking to defend the national title he captured in dramatic fashion last season at Oakfield Golf & Country Club in Nova Scotia. Landine delivered one of the moments of the season in 2025, chipping in on the 54th hole to force a playoff with Yohann Benson before eventually prevailing in extra holes to secure the national championship.
The championship, one of the marquee events on the PGA of Canada national schedule, has once again attracted one of the deepest fields of the season. Alongside Landine, several former champions and some of the Association’s most accomplished competitors will tee it up at Bayview.
Among the notable names in the field are former champions Wes Heffernan, Yohann Benson, Branson Ferrier and Brad Kerfoot, all looking to add another national title to their resume. Heffernan, a two-time winner of the championship in 2019 and 2024, remains one of the most accomplished competitors in Canadian professional golf, while Benson enters the week after narrowly missing out on the title in last year’s playoff. Ferrier, the 2021 champion, and Kerfoot, the 2015 champion, add even more depth to an already stacked field.
Thanks to his ranking on the ECCO Player Rankings, Benson received an exemption into the RBC Canadian Open set for TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley in a few short weeks. The Assistants’ Championship of Canada will be perfect tournament prep as he gets set to compete in his second PGA TOUR event (Benson competed in the 2008 US Open).
Located in Thornhill, Bayview Golf & Country Club will provide a demanding test for the country’s top assistant professionals. The classic parkland layout is known for its narrow, tree-lined fairways, strategically placed bunkering and challenging green complexes that place a premium on precision and patience.
What players will need to pay attention to this week:
-
Positioning off the tee: Bayview rewards accuracy more than power, with several holes requiring disciplined club selection and precise placement into fairways.
-
Approach play into elevated and well-protected greens: Players who control their distances and avoid short-siding themselves around the greens will have a significant advantage.
-
Managing momentum: With a deep field and plenty of scoring opportunities available, limiting mistakes and staying patient over four rounds will be critical.
-
The Birdie Juice Birdie Race: Aggressive play could pay off throughout the week, as the Birdie Juice Birdie Race will begin, with the player making the most birdies during the championship earning a cash prize.
-
Six provinces will compete in the InterZone Championship, with the top three receiving payouts. The PGA of Alberta will look to defend their title.
Players will begin competition Tuesday morning at 7:30 AM ET, with the champion crowned following Thursday’s final round.
